A big IPTV lineup is great until you're scrolling through it with arrow keys looking for one channel. Learning to search on IPTV with a Firestick remote saves a lot of time, and there are more options than most people realize: the search inside your IPTV app, typing channel numbers, voice typing, using your phone as a keyboard, and simply setting things up so you rarely need to search at all. Here are the methods that work best, app by app.

1. Search on IPTV inside your player app

Fire TV's main search (the magnifying glass on the home screen) looks through Amazon's catalog and installed apps, not inside your IPTV playlist. To search on IPTV channels and titles, use the search built into your player:

AppWhere to find search
IPTV Smarters ProMagnifying glass at the top of Live TV, Movies or Series
TiviMateOpen the left menu (press left in the guide) and choose Search
XCIPTV PlayerSearch icon at the top of each section
IBO PlayerSearch icon in the channel and movie lists

Tip: search in the right section. Searching inside Movies won't find a live channel, and vice versa.

2. Type channel numbers

In TiviMate and some other players, channels have numbers. The standard Fire TV remote doesn't have a number pad, but many apps let you press OK and pick a number, or you can use the phone app's number keys (see tip 4). Learning the numbers of your five main channels is faster than any search.

3. Search on IPTV by voice with the Alexa button

On many Fire TV devices, when the on-screen keyboard is open in a search field, you can hold the microphone (Alexa) button and speak. Whether the text goes into the IPTV app's search box depends on the app and the Fire OS version. If it works on yours, it's the fastest way to search on IPTV by name. If Alexa tries to answer instead, use tip 4.

4. Use your phone as a keyboard

The free Amazon Fire TV app (also on the App Store) turns your phone into a remote with a real keyboard. Connect it to the same Wi-Fi as your Fire TV, open the search box in your IPTV app, tap the keyboard icon on the phone and type. It's also the easiest way to enter long server addresses when you first set up an app.

5. Search smarter with the TV guide

  • Browse by group. Channel groups like Sports, News or Kids narrow things down before you search.
  • Use the guide's program search in TiviMate to find a show by name, not just a channel.
  • Sort movies by recently added or alphabetically in IPTV Smarters Pro.
  • Favorites: long-press a channel and add it. Put your top ten there and you'll rarely search for live TV again.
  • Hide groups: hide categories nobody in your house watches.
  • Recently watched: most apps keep a history row; use it to jump back to last night's channel.
  • Auto-start: set the app to open on the last channel you watched.

How to search on IPTV movies and series

Movies and series have their own search in most apps, and it works a little differently from live channels:

  • Search by the main title, without the year or season. "Office" finds more than "The Office Season 3".
  • Check the category first. Many apps search only inside the category you're in; switch to "All" if it's available.
  • Use "Recently added" to see what's new without searching at all.
  • Continue watching: most apps keep a row of titles you started, so you can resume without searching again.

Remote shortcuts that save time

ButtonWhat it usually does in IPTV apps
Up / Down in full screenNext or previous channel
OK in full screenChannel list or playback menu
Left in the guideOpens the side menu (TiviMate: Search, Settings)
Menu (three lines)Options: favorites, subtitles, audio track
Rewind / Fast-forwardSkip in movies, or jump through the guide

Button behavior varies by app, so spend two minutes trying each one. Once you know the shortcuts, you'll search on IPTV far less often.

Setting up search for the whole family

If several people use the same TV, a shared favorites list sorted by person (sports, news, kids) means most of the household never needs the search box at all. Keep the phone-keyboard trick for the one person who likes hunting for movies.

More questions about how to search on IPTV

Can I search the TV guide for a show?

In TiviMate, yes: its search finds programs in the guide as well as channel names. Other apps mostly search channel names.

Why is searching slow on my Fire TV Stick?

Large playlists take longer to search on older sticks. Hiding unused groups makes search faster.

Does search work in catch-up?

Usually you browse catch-up through the guide instead of search. Open the channel in the guide and move back in time.

Can I search in Spanish?

Yes, type the title as it appears in your playlist. Titles are usually listed in their original language.

Is there a keyboard I can plug into a Fire TV?

Some Bluetooth keyboards pair with Fire TV under Settings › Controllers and Bluetooth Devices. The phone app is simpler for most people.

Search on IPTV: a quick routine

  1. Go to the right section: Live TV, Movies or Series.
  2. Open the app's search, not the Fire TV home search.
  3. Type one distinctive word using the phone app or voice typing.
  4. Add what you find to Favorites so you don't need to search again.

Searching on other remotes

The same ideas work on other devices. On Apple TV, open the app's search and use the iPhone keyboard prompt or Siri dictation in the text field. On Google TV and Android TV, the Google TV app on your phone has a keyboard you can use in any search box, and many remotes support voice typing in text fields. On Samsung and LG TVs, the SmartThings and LG ThinQ apps can act as a keyboard for some apps.

Making search easier for older viewers

If a parent or grandparent uses the TV, skip search entirely: set up favorites with their channels in the order they like, turn on auto-start so the app opens on the last channel, and show them just two buttons, up and down, to change channels. Save search for the rare time they want something new, and let them call you (or us on WhatsApp) for that.

Organizing channels so you can find them

A tidy channel list is the best search tool of all. In TiviMate, you can rename groups, move them up or down and hide the ones you never use. In IPTV Smarters Pro, use favorites and hide categories through the settings. Spend ten minutes on this once and you'll find channels faster every day after that.

A good pattern for most households: Favorites first, then Local and News, then Sports, then Movies and Kids. Hide international or niche groups you don't watch; you can always unhide them later. With a list like that, the up and down buttons on your Firestick remote get you anywhere in seconds, and you'll only search on IPTV when you're looking for something new.

Why search results can look different in each app

Each IPTV player builds its own search from the playlist, so the same word can return different results in TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and XCIPTV. Some apps search only the section you're in; others search everything. Some match the start of a name only, while others match any part of it. If one app doesn't find what you're looking for, try a shorter word, switch sections, or check the same search in another app. The channel is usually there; it's just listed under a slightly different name than you expected, such as with an HD or 4K tag.

When search doesn't find a channel

Channel names in playlists can be written differently from what you expect, for example with a region or quality tag like "HD" or "4K". Try a shorter search term: one distinctive word usually works better than the full name. If a channel you expect still doesn't appear, message us and we'll tell you whether it's in the current lineup and under which name.

Quick answers

Can Alexa change IPTV channels?

Alexa controls Fire TV itself and apps built for it. Most IPTV players don't support Alexa voice commands for changing channels.

Why does Fire TV search not show my IPTV channels?

Fire TV's home search doesn't index what's inside IPTV apps. Use the search in your player instead.
